            A Bit About Me

Silence was always important to me.

I yearned for it, before I was 23.

I hated loud voices, loud cars, and sirens.

I wanted to hear the birds sing, and the wind in the trees.

Sounds are now important to me.

As I have aged and can no longer see,

I yearn for loud voices, loud cars, and sirens,

Birds singing, and wind in the trees.

A Bit More About Me

I laugh when I hear people say,

I wish I knew then what I know today.

I would not have done or said that,

And certainly not acted like a brat.

I am older now, and I forever say,

Thank heavens I did not know the right way.

I would have missed some laughs, and tears from the bad,

But most of all, the memories of all I have had.

They called them Jalopies

Every high school boy had one. They learned to tune these old Junkers to purr like a kitten or roar like a lion. Think  “Grease”.

My brother and I were taking physics class about engines. One Saturday, he decided to take our old car apart and clean the engine. While he took it apart, I cleaned the pieces to sparkle and lined them up on the carport floor. At the end of the day we had several parts left over and the car wouldn’t start.

It cost my dad a week’s salary to get a friend to come over on Sunday and put it back together.

But, on Monday morning, we proudly drove our 1939 Ford Jalopy to school.
